The short answer: multiply the bed’s square footage by the depth you want in inches, then divide by 324. A 430 square foot bed at 3 inches deep needs about 4 cubic yards of mulch. Round up to the next whole yard before you order.
Use the calculator for the number. Use the rest of this page to decide whether that number is the one to order — depth, access, and whether your material is sold by volume or by weight all move it.
Know your yardage? The delivered price — material and delivery together — takes an address and about ten seconds.
Price my deliveryDepth is the number people get wrong
Square footage is easy to measure and hard to get wrong. Depth is a judgment call, and it moves the order more than anything else: going from 2 inches to 4 inches doubles the material for the exact same bed.
| Depth | Best for | Coverage per cubic yard |
|---|---|---|
| 2 inches | Light top-up over mulch that is still intact | 1 yd³ covers about 162 sq ft |
| 3 inches | The standard bed refresh — what most orders assume | 1 yd³ covers about 108 sq ft |
| 4 inches | Bare beds, new plantings, weed suppression | 1 yd³ covers about 81 sq ft |
| 4–6 inches | Gravel driveways, base course, grade changes | 1 yd³ covers about 54–81 sq ft |
What each order size costs
Planning ranges for dyed mulch at its starting price of $42 per cubic yard — material only, before delivery. Stone and gravel price by the ton and land differently; the calculator above shows the real figure for whichever material you pick.
| Order | Yardage | Material, from | What it usually covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small job | 1–2 yards | $42–$84 | Tree rings, one front bed, topping off a raised bed. |
| Typical refresh | 3–5 yards | $126–$210 | The most common order. Front and side beds at 3 inches. |
| Full property | 6–10 yards | $252–$420 | Every bed on the lot, or a new bed built from bare soil. |
| Large or structural | 11+ yards | $462+ | Driveway gravel, regrading, fill. Often more than one truck. |
Delivery is added once we know your address, and it is not a flat fee — it is the real driving distance from the yard that serves you. That is why we show it up front instead of at checkout.
Where the estimate stops being enough
Good enough for
Rectangular beds, a driveway you can pace out, and any order where being a half yard over costs less than a second trip.
Not enough for
Slopes and grade changes, beds with heavy existing mulch to account for, and access questions — whether the truck can reach the spot at all.
Before you order
- Measure each bed separately, then add the yardages — not the dimensions.
- Treat a curved bed as the rectangle that roughly contains it.
- Use 3 inches unless the bed is bare, in which case use 4.
- Round up to the next whole yard.
- Check the drop spot: firm ground, clear path, nothing low overhead.
